Samsung Expands Horticulture LED Lineups to Advance Greenhouse and Vertical Farming

In today‘s technology age, farming and horticulture have also improved and take a wide leap in the past decade. Light is the single most critical element impacting the success of a controlled environment farm! Today new horticulture LEDs are designed to promote healthier plant growth and improve farming conditions for indoor growers.

Taking a step further in this segment, Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital solutions, announced on 21st Nov 2018, its new horticulture LED lineups which includes full-spectrum packages and modules as well as color (monochromatic) LEDs. Meant for optimized for lighting in greenhouses and vertical farming, the new LEDs are capable of offering a wider spectrum of light quality and intensity for healthier plant growth, enhanced farming environments, and reduced lighting system costs.

What is Horticultural LED?

Before we jump into the real news of Samsung and its offerings to horticulture, let’s have an understanding of what actually horticultural LED is.  In fact, LED lights for the horticultural industry are powerful LED fixture, which means they have the intensity and color spectrum needed to trigger the plant growth. The major difference between horticultural LED systems and traditional lighting is that artificially produced i.e. LED lights helps the grower to control the spectral distribution. This impacts on both crop quality and production methods.

Conventional light sources like HPS have a relatively scattered spectral distribution, mostly concentrated around the green region of the spectrum.

LED grow lights, on the other hand, are dedicated to their intensity specifically on a red and blue light. This harmonizes with the photosynthetic action spectrum, thus matching the light composition that plants benefit the most from.

Full-spectrum light emits a continuous range of wavelengths from blue and green to red, forming a light blend best for horticultural uses. Compared to narrow spectrum lighting, full-spectrum-based LEDs developed by Samsung’s encourage healthier and more perfect plant growth by stimulating photosynthesis, improving plant immunity and adding nutritional value. Moreover, the LEDs can help to enhance the overall farming environment by allowing growers to evaluate plant conditions more easily and identify diseases, like damping-off, at an earlier stage under bright white lighting. It is more cost-effective and highly efficient alternatives to higher-priced red LEDs. Full-spectrum LEDs can help lower the costs of a grower’s lighting system.

“Samsung’s full-spectrum-based horticulture LEDs present a new way of using LED lighting to improve plant cultivation at reduced system costs,” said Un Soo Kim, senior vice president of LED Business Team at Samsung Electronics. “We plan to further expand our horticulture offerings by integrating the latest in smart LED lighting technology, including Samsung’s leading sensor and connectivity solutions.”

Apart from this, Samsung has also added blue, red and far-red LEDs to its horticulture offerings to deliver an extensive variety of wavelength combinations and address the different design requirements of horticulture lighting manufacturers.

Powered by Samsung’s market-proven LED technologies, the new full spectrum and color LED lineups is known for its high degree of reliability, making them the most suitable thing to withstand high temperatures and humidity levels along with agricultural chemicals used in greenhouses and vertical farming.

Samsung’s horticulture LED offerings are now produced in mass packages for lighting manufacturers and growers worldwide. It will be available in the market in the first quarter of 2019.
